Automation should remove repetition, not judgement. A practical view of what to hand over and what to keep.
Start with the repetition
The honest test for automation is simple: is a person doing the same thing, the same way, more than a few times a week? That is the work to hand over first.
Reporting assembly, campaign setup, first-draft copy, routine support replies and CRM hygiene all qualify. None of them are where judgement lives.
Keep the judgement
Positioning, creative direction, tone in a crisis and anything that commits the brand publicly should stay with people. AI is very good at producing plausible work and has no stake in whether it is right.
The useful arrangement is AI drafting and a person deciding — not the reverse.
Build it around the process you already have
Automation that requires the team to work differently tends to get abandoned. Automation built around the process they already run tends to stick.
Start from the workflow, not from the tool.
